A striking modern front entrance featuring custom gabion walls filled with river stone, natural rock-face sandstone steps, and integrated planting beds with Japanese maple and ornamental grasses. The wire-cage gabion retaining walls create a dramatic contemporary statement while providing functional grade changes along the full walkway.
The Challenge
A grade change between the house level and the backyard patio created an awkward, unusable transition. The existing wooden steps were rotting and unsafe.
Our Approach
Constructed a charcoal stacked-stone retaining wall to manage the grade change, with integrated stone steps that flow seamlessly into the paver patio below. Used contrasting light and dark tones to create visual depth.
The Result
A clean, modern transition between levels that turned a liability into a design feature — with a retaining wall that doubles as a visual anchor for the entire backyard.
